Stony Point & Tomkins Cove, NY
Brief Parish History
Our parish was established in 1885 when Immaculate Conception Church of Tomkins Cove officially separated from St. Peter’s of Haverstraw to form an independent parish due to an increase in the Catholic population. Many of the early immigrants were Irish peasants who came to the North Rockland area to flee the famine-stricken areas of West Ireland, the Counties of Mayo, Galway, Clare, Sligo, and Cork. The new settlers found in North Rockland an area surrounded with natural beauty, filled with history, and steeped in faith in God.
With the advent of the Tappan Zee Bridge and the opening of the Palisades Interstate parkway, this quiet rural area of Rockland’s northeast became a haven for those who sought to leave the noisy city and escape to a dream house where children could be brought up with security.
Our current school building on Main Street was opened in 1952, (sadly the final graduating class from our Parish School was in June, 2008).
The new Immaculate Conception Church was dedicated on December 12, 1982 by His Eminence Terence Cardinal Cooke.
On Sunday, December 8, 1985, The Feast of the Immaculate Conception, His Eminence John Cardinal O'Connor was the main celebrant at a 3:00pm mass to celebrate the Centennial Year of the founding of the parish.
Our area continues to grow and flourish. In this affluent time we see many new homes being constructed with the influx of younger families with children. This is no longer a small river town, and Immaculate is anything but a small country parish. We currently have over 1,000 registered families and a Religious Education Program of 200 children.
Each year we experience growth and are challenged to respond in a creative way to the needs of our people.
We thank you for your interest in visiting our web site and ask that you say a prayer for all of us.
If you live in Stony Point or Tomkins Cove, we welcome you to our church
and invite you to become an active member of our Parish Family!
